016 Upic U: Upic's 10th Anniversary/Dick Aft

Spring 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the formation of Upic Solutions as a stand-alone 501 c 3 non-profit technology organization owned and managed by United Ways.  Over the next several podcast episodes, we will be interviewing some of the founding members of the original organization.

In today’s episode, we will interview Dick Aft who was then the CEO of the United Way of Greater Cincinnati.  Dick is considered the “Father of Upic” by many due to his initiative to bring several regional United Ways together in the mid-1990’s to discuss the potential benefits of a closer working relationship between the United Ways.  Those meetings lead to a working agreement for IT services between the United Ways in Lexington, KY and Cincinnati, OH---which formed the foundation of the newly formed Upic in 2001.

  • Inviting regional UW’s together to discuss potential areas of cooperation
  • Lexington and Cincinnati’s early pilot project on IT services
  • Principles which proved vital during the early formative days of Upic
  • Columbus and Cincinnati pursue feasibility study and next steps
  • Funding and staffing the new organization
  • Dick turns the tables and asks “What’s next for Upic”?
  • Dick’s challenge for Upic’s 15th anniversary
  • The difficult choice as CEO:  how to best outsource/fulfill mission
